Personal problems are a normal part of living. For this reason, Penn State offers the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), University-wide, to help deal with life's rough spots whether they occur on or off the job. When you or your household members are helped with a personal problem, home life improves, work improves, and everyone benefits.
An EAP is a confidential, consultative employee and family resource as a first line of defense for personal or work-related concerns for yourself or your family.
Make a positive plan, the EAP is there for you and your family's use. Successful coping strategies begin with consultation.
All employees who are eligible for benefits (even if they have not elected them), their dependents, and anyone who lives within their household can use the EAP.
There is no limit to the number of times you or your family/household members can use the EAP. All EAP services have been pre-paid by Penn State. There are no fees for calling the EAP or for your face-to-face visits with a local therapist (five free face-to-face visits per concern, with no limit to the number of concerns you or your family household members may need to address).
You can use the EAP by calling toll-free 1-866-749-1735 seven days a week, 24-hours per day. The telephone is answered in North Carolina by qualified therapists. They are your first step in helping you with your immediate needs and directing you to local therapists for face-to-face sessions, if needed.

No one will know that you used the EAP unless you tell someone. Penn State does not provide ValueOptions with lists of eligible employees or their dependents or household members.
Penn State makes the arrangement with ValueOptions for "assumed eligibility." This means that if you or someone in your household calls the toll-free number (1-866-749-1735), they assume you are eligible to use it.
If you start seeing a therapist and find that you do not connect with him or her, please call the toll-free number (866-749-1735) and request a new therapist.
