Prescription Drug Plan Options
 

The following is a brief overview of the prescription drug coverage that is a part of the health care plans offered by Penn State University. Please consult Prescription Drug Benefits for more specific information, including drug formularies.

RETAIL PHARMACY PLAN-HEALTH AMERICA HMO AND PENN STATE CHOICE

If you elect coverage in the HealthAmerica HMO or the Penn State Choice plan you have a 3-tiered pharmacy program available to you. Designed to provide greater flexibility for your prescription drug purchases, the plan provides 50% coverage for formulary medication at your local participating pharmacy.

The three tiers are designed to provide you with the choice of receiving the greatest level of coverage by choosing formulary drugs while providing some level of coverage to non-formulary medications. The tiers are:

 
 

As a HealthAmerica HMO or Penn State Choice member you reserve the right to utilize the Formulary exceptions process and the Mandatory Generic exceptions process to the receive highest level of coverage. Some drugs require Prior Authorization before the prescription will be filled. Formulary information is available from the HealthAmerica web site.

RETAIL PHARMACY PLAN - OTHER HMOs

 

If you elect HMO coverage with Geisinger, First Priority, Keystone, or Aetna HMO's you have a 50/50 drug plan for prescriptions you purchase at local participating retail pharmacies. Under this plan, prescriptions are covered at 50% of the average wholesale price at the time of purchase. The employee will pay 50% of the discounted amount.

MAIL ORDER MAINTENANCE DRUG COVERAGE THROUGH ENVISIONRX (FOR THE HEALTHAMERICA HMO ONLY)

 

If you elect coverage in the HealthAmerica HMO or the Penn State Choice plan you have a 3-tiered maintenance pharmacy program available to you. Designed to provide greater flexibility for your prescription drug purchases, the plan provides 80% coverage for formulary maintenance medication purchased from Walgreen's Mail Order prescription services in Orlando, FL.

The three tiers are designed to provide you with the choice of receiving the greatest level of coverage by choosing formulary drugs while providing some level of coverage to non-formulary medications. The tiers are:

 
 

This mail order plan is administered by EnvisionRx Pharmaceutical Services, in partnership with Walgreen's Mail Service Pharmacy. Walgreen's offers free home delivery of up to a three months supply of the prescriptions you take most often. Penn State pays 80% of the cost of eligible drugs; you are responsible for only 20% of the cost. No deductible applies to this prescription drug coverage. EnvisionRx services provides an on line formulary and pricing service exclusively for Penn State participants. Maintenance Prescription Drug Plan (MPDP)

 

If you are enrolled in the Penn State Choice, Keystone Western, Keystone Central, Blue Cross of Northeastern PA (First Priority), Aetna or Geisinger HMOs you have a 3-tiered maintenance pharmacy program available to you. Designed to provide greater flexibility for your maintenance prescription drug purchases, the plan provides 80% coverage for formulary maintenance medication purchased the University Health Services Pharmacy.

The three tiers are designed to provide you with the choice of receiving the greatest level of coverage by choosing formulary drugs while providing some level of coverage to non-formulary medications. The 3 tiers are:

 
 

Only certain drugs are included in this program. The University Health Services Pharmacy provides a list of eligible medications Maintenance prescription drugs may be purchased in person at the Ritenour Building or by mail order from the University Pharmacy. When ordering by mail, it is important to allow 14 days for delivery.
