10,000 Steps Program (WEL 338) (Formerly...Park and Walk, Walk, Walk)
The Surgeon General has recommended that Americans get at least 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. Studies show that increased physical activity reduces stress, improves weight management, and reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis.
Taking 10,000 steps a day can lead to better health. The average inactive person takes about 2,000-4,000 steps a day.
Using a pedometer to track steps taken throughout the day can help raise ones awareness of their current activity level. This immediate feedback enables a person to set goals for improving their activity level.
The 10,000 Steps program is an "on your own" 8 weeks long program . (Those enrolled in the Highmark Blueshield PPOBlue Plan may obtain a pedometer for $11 through the Health Matters' office. In addition, for an additional $5, you will receive a walking log where you are able to track your progress AND earn wellness credits.
