Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance provides protection against financial losses due to accidental death and accidental losses. As a regular full-time University employee, you can purchase this coverage for yourself only, or you can include AD&D coverage for your spouse and your children. This program is underwritten by The Hartford Insurance Company. The Hartford AD&D Presentation is available for your review.

EMPLOYEE ONLY COVERAGE

You may choose a coverage amount ranging from $10,000 to $300,000. Coverage is available regardless of your health history.

FAMILY COVERAGE

You may elect to extend AD&D coverage to your spouse and eligible dependent children (children up to age 19 and ages 19 through 24 if they are full-time students). The amount of insurance that will be applicable to your family members is a percentage of the amount you select for yourself. Your spouse will be insured for 60% of the coverage amount you selected for yourself. Each child will be insured for 20% of the coverage amount you selected.

The following table illustrates the coverage amounts when family coverage is selected:

Choose an Amount For You Your Spouse Is Covered For 60% of Your Amount Each Child Is Covered For 20% of Your Amount
$10,000 $6,000 $2,000
$25,000 $15,000 $5,000
$50,000 $30,000 $10,000

RECEIVING BENEFITS

AD&D insurance benefits are paid in the event of a covered accidental death, loss of limb, or total loss of eyesight.

If a covered injury results in the loss of your life and/or that of your covered dependent, the applicable principal sum will be payable, less any amount that may previously have been paid due to dismemberment.

Should you die as a result of a covered accident, your beneficiary will receive the full amount of the AD&D death benefit (the principal amount). If you suffer an accidental loss of limb or total eyesight as a result of a covered accident, then you will receive 100% or 50% of the principal amount, depending on the extent of your injury.

TRAVEL ASSISTANCE

When an accident occurs or sudden illness strikes during business or vacation travel, unfamiliar surroundings and medical facilities often present additional pressures. When we travel abroad, language differences, foreign customs and laws, and inadequate medical facilities can make dangerous situations even worse. Fortunately, your Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance from the Hartford includes travel assistance for employees and their family members who are covered by the program.

Faculty and Staff who participate in the Accidental Death and Dismemberment Policy have an additional security benefit under the Hartford Travel Assistance Program, provided by Europ Assistance, USA. Their professionals are available to provide help when employees need it most, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The program provides three kinds of services for business or vacation travels - Pre Trip Information, Emergency Medical Assistance, and Emergency Personal Services. Travel Assistance Program information is available online or by contacting the Employee Benefits Division at benefits@psu.edu or by phone at (814) 865-1473.   If you need to submit a claim for medical services received while outside the United States, please complete the International Claim Form and submit it to the BlueCard Worldwide Service Center address listed on the form.
